The Bengali culture, bountiful in its richness of colour and tradition, has a lot to offer in fashion and style. Like other cultures and communities, the Bengali community too has its history and legacy bookmarked in its people, the way live, the way they dress and the pride with which they carry their roots on their sleeves.
NABC’s new addition to the cornucopia of ‘bangaliaana’ for the upcoming year is a celebration and a testament to this rich legacy that has evolved holding the hands of the Bengali Rennaissance and has survived the turmoils of partition. NABC 2023 thus presents "Bangoshree".
Men are not usually considered patrons of fashion and style, with the predominant focus being on women. However, there is a lot that they have to offer in this regard. Bengali men are no exception. A typical Bengali man would come into our minds donning the quintessential “Dhuti-Punjabi”. This is mostly due to a common Bengali nostalgia and yearning for the traditional that take Bengali men everywhere back to this classic pairing of clothes every Durga Puja.
However, pure Bengali tradition, along with influences of the British, Spanish, and Portuguese, are equally a part of the Bangaliaana that we all have come to associate our culture with. The Edwardian suits during the 1920s, the “gile kora Punjabi”, the airy shirt-kameez, and the lungi are all part of our rich and variegated tradition.
The three sections of ‘‘‘Bangoshree’’” are Section A, for 18-35-year-olds, Section B, for men above 35 years of age, and Section C, or the ‘Bangali Babu’ contest which is for middle-aged men with confidence and flair. It is indeed going to be very interesting to see how the traditions, fixed with contemporary modernization make their way on to the ramp where men of various age groups display their version and style of what it means to be a Bengali.
