Mura’s son came from a simple family. Three hundred years before the birth of Jesus Christ, the identity of the mother was universal in the Indian subcontinent. The child lived up to the name and became the first Maurya. Thus began his history of firsts.
The first all-India empire was built by his hands. The Mauryan Empire, the pride of India, also referred to as “Akhanda Bharat” was the brainchild of Chandragupta Maurya and Kautilya. He also birthed modern governance and economy with Kautilya on his side, fighting on an equal footing with warriors from distant Greece. Chandragupta ushered in a new turn in Indo-Greece relations by establishing Megasthenes in the royal assembly -and venturing beyond the borders to forge a rich exchange of language, culture, customs, etc.
NABC presents ‘Chandragupta Maurya’, a performance in the traditional Bengali culture scape of “Jatra”. Jatra is an integral part of the Bengali regional culture framework. Here artists are experts not only in the art of acting but also in dancing and singing. An ensemble of musicians is also present on stage conjuring an amalgamation of theatre and live music together.
Chandragupta Maurya is NABC’s much-required resuscitation of the “Jatra” tradition and a special attraction in this year’s conference.
